Archer & Anduril Unveil Hybrid-Electric Autonomous VTOL Platform

Defense tech developer Anduril and air mobility company Archer Aviation have jointly unveiled a new autonomous vertical takeoff and landing aircraft platform engineered for both commercial and military deployments.

The defense variant of the dual-use platform, named Thunder, operates as a Group 5 autonomous attack rotorcraft intended to multiply the combat power of crewed attack and assault aircraft. By integrating commercial innovations in electric propulsion and rotor engineering into a clean-sheet architecture, the partnership aims to deliver a step change in vertical lift capabilities, pairing high speed and extended range with heavy payload capacity and efficient operating costs.

The platform utilizes a series hybrid-electric powertrain that achieves significant endurance while maintaining precise power optimization across various flight regimes. Its dual-tiltrotor configuration enables wingborne cruise efficiency alongside runway-independent operations from austere environments, bypassing the traditional range constraints of standard rotorcraft. To optimize efficiency, the tiltrotors vary rotor RPM during flight, lowering fuel burn while minimizing the aircraft’s acoustic signature to improve survivability during low-altitude ingress.

Engineered to carry modular, heavy payloads, the aircraft builds on years of air taxi development and flight testing, leveraging Archer’s experience in designing and manufacturing advanced vertical takeoff systems. Rather than adapting existing hardware, the team took a first-principles approach to meet modern operational demands across commercial and defense sectors.

The clean-sheet, dual-use platform that we’ve built with Archer truly represents a step change in capability.”

We couldn’t simply tweak our existing aircraft. Instead, we took a bold first principles approach alongside Anduril to develop what we believe is the most sophisticated vertical lift aircraft ever made.”

Development has already progressed through multiple test flights using full-scale surrogate aircraft to validate core systems. The first flight of the Thunder platform is scheduled for 2027, with Archer expected to reveal its initial commercial partners for the civilian platform later this week.
