U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has become the first Transportation Secretary in American history to fly in an electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
The historic flight took place at the Vermont headquarters of BETA Technologies, Inc., marking a significant milestone in the development of next generation vertical flight technology. Proponents view these clean aviation platforms as important catalysts to generate new jobs, connect communities, and strengthen American leadership in aviation.
To systematically integrate the technology into the national airspace, Secretary Duffy and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) unveiled a new pilot program called the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). The newly launched initiative is tasked with testing advanced air mobility vehicles and their real-world applications directly in the field. The operational scope of the eIPP encompasses eight selected projects spanning 26 states, forming partnerships with leading aircraft manufacturers, operators, and state entities.

Field testing through the eIPP will target a diverse range of critical aerospace applications. These include urban air taxi services, regional passenger transportation—which encompasses short take-off and landing aircraft—and dedicated cargo and logistics networks. Furthermore, the multi-state projects will evaluate emergency medical response operations, autonomous flight technologies, and specialized transportation for the offshore and energy sectors.
BETA Technologies is supporting this ecosystem by developing both an electric conventional take-off and landing aircraft (eCTOL) and an eVTOL aircraft. To enable these new flight assets, the company is additionally rolling out a nationwide suite of necessary charging infrastructure.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy, said, “This is the kind of innovation I love to see: technology that’s going to fundamentally improve how people and products move. BETA Technologies is one of many great American companies making sure the United States’ leads the way in this exciting technology. From emergency organ transplants to regional air travel, these next generation aircraft have so many revolutionary applications. The future of flight is coming. The Trump Administration will continue to do our part to support the safe integration of these innovations into our airspace.”
