EHang has been selected alongside its partners to participate in the first batch of trial projects under Hong Kong’s new low-altitude economy regulatory sandbox initiative.
The advanced air mobility technology platform company is partnering with Kwoon Chung Smart Mobility Co.,Ltd and Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited for the unconventional aircraft application trials. Together, the organizations intend to combine their resources to advance compliant demonstration flights, validate operational scenarios, and coordinate efforts to support the growth of the region’s low-altitude infrastructure.
The selection comes as Hong Kong rolls out multiple rounds of regulatory sandbox projects to position the low-altitude economy as a primary driver for local innovation. EHang, which specializes in pilotless electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has already established collaborative ties in the region to lay the groundwork for these local air mobility applications.
As a developer in the sector, EHang is the first company to obtain a type certificate, production certificate, and standard airworthiness certificate for a pilotless human-carrying eVTOL in China. The company’s flagship EH216-S aircraft has completed more than 90,000 safe flights as of May 2026. It currently operates routine commercial trial services in the cities of Guangzhou and Hefei, providing data and operational experience intended to help the broader industry transition into scaled commercial operations.
By expanding its focus to Hong Kong, the company aims to leverage the city’s position as a gateway to both the Greater Bay Area and global markets. The upcoming sandbox trials will serve as a testing ground to explore broader advanced air mobility applications and build out a comprehensive low-altitude ecosystem across the Greater Bay Area.
