Electra’s EL2 Goldfinch prototype has resumed flight operations following the completion of its first major modification and heavy maintenance cycle.

In December 2024, Electra temporarily paused EL2 flight operations to integrate upgraded systems and conduct structural modifications. With those enhancements now complete, flight testing has resumed.

The EL2 is a two-seat hybrid-electric demonstrator aircraft that plays a central role in shaping the development of Electra’s nine-passenger production model, the EL9. Since its initial flight in November 2023, the EL2 has completed 14 months of flight testing, providing critical performance data to inform future design and operational capabilities.

The upgraded EL2 is expanding its flight envelope to support continued evaluation of Electra’s proprietary blown-lift technology and to validate the EL9’s ultra short takeoff and landing (ULSTOL) performance.

The EL9 will be a fixed-wing aircraft capable of routine operations from areas as compact as 150 feet in length. This Ultra Short capability is made possible through Electra’s hybrid-electric propulsion system and advanced blown-lift aerodynamics, enabling safe, quiet, and efficient operations from diverse and minimally developed locations.

By enabling operations from spaces such as parking lots, grass fields, and small community airstrips, the EL9 will open new access points for regional air mobility. The aircraft is designed to complement and revitalize general aviation infrastructure, offering a quiet and low-emission solution for underserved markets. In addition, it can integrate into existing airport ecosystems by operating from ramps, taxiways, and fixed-base operator (FBO) areas, reducing reliance on congested terminals and runways.

Electra’s Ultra Short approach is designed around direct-to-destination travel, minimizing the need for lengthy ground transportation or transfers through traditional hub airports. This model redefines how and where regional aviation can operate, prioritizing accessibility, efficiency, and sustainability.

The EL2’s return to flight follows Electra’s successful $115 million Series B funding round and marks another milestone on the path toward finalizing the EL9’s configuration. The program remains on track to enter preproduction and initiate EL9 flight testing in 2027.
