Pipistrel, a subsidiary of Textron Inc., has completed the first hover flight of its Nuuva V300, a hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) unmanned aircraft designed for long-range, high-capacity logistics.
The Nuuva V300 is engineered to carry payloads of up to 600 pounds across distances reaching 300 nautical miles. Its innovative design allows cargo to be loaded via the nose, streamlining logistics operations while accommodating multiple configurations. With a spacious 100-cubic-foot cargo bay, it can transport three pallets or bulk-loaded goods, making it highly adaptable for diverse transportation needs.
Kriya Shortt, President & CEO of Textron eAviation, said, “We are thrilled to witness the Nuuva V300’s first flight, a demonstration of our leadership in emerging technology and advanced air mobility, as well as our commitment to multi-purpose aviation solutions.
“The Nuuva V300’s unique capabilities and robust design will not only transform logistics but also play a crucial role in commercial and defense missions such as search and rescue, humanitarian aid, disaster relief and ship-to-shore deliveries.”
Gabriel Massey, President & Managing Director of Pipistrel, added, “Today’s milestone is a testament to the hard work and innovative spirit of our team at Pipistrel,” added Gabriel Massey, President & Managing Director of Pipistrel. “The Nuuva’s first flight demonstrates Pipistrel’s strength in electric propulsion and dedication to advancing the aviation industry through our active involvement in research programs and our successful collaboration with regulatory agencies, including our recent operational authorization from the Italian Civil Air Authority (ENAC).”
Combining a zero-emission electric VTOL powertrain with a dedicated cruise propulsion system, the aircraft delivers exceptional efficiency, flexibility, and operational freedom. Proprietary battery technology developed in-house ensures sustainable, cost-effective performance across various mission profiles.
The aircraft is remotely managed via an advanced ground control system developed in collaboration with Textron Systems, leveraging decades of expertise in uncrewed operations. Fully autonomous flight capabilities enable seamless point-and-click mission execution, backed by proven command and control solutions used extensively in U.S. military programs.
Designed for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations, the Nuuva V300 transitions smoothly from vertical lift to forward flight, adhering to pre-programmed routes until touchdown. Its fly-by-wire, triple-redundant flight control system, supplied by Honeywell, ensures robust safety and reliability.
To further advance testing and refine capabilities, a second Nuuva V300 prototype will join the flight program in 2025, reinforcing Pipistrel’s commitment to setting new benchmarks in unmanned aerial logistics.
