A century after the original Pulitzer air races showcased advanced aviation technology of the 1920s, the competition is returning with a new electric-powered twist.
The Pulitzer Electric Aircraft Race will take place from October 10-13, 2025, bringing together the latest in electric flight innovations from around the world. This revival not only celebrates a hundred years of aviation progress but also reinforces Ohio’s growing role as a key hub for AAM.
The National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence (NAAMCE) at Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport (K-SGH) has been selected as the host of this prestigious event. The Advanced Air Mobility Institute has issued its congratulations to NAAMCE on this achievement, recognizing the significance of Springfield’s leadership in fostering next-generation aviation technology.
Ted Angel, Executive Director of NAAMCE, said, “We are thrilled to welcome the Pulitzer Electric Aircraft Race to Springfield, Ohio, after a century-long hiatus. The 1924 race took place at Wright Field, now part of Area B of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. In that time Ohio has upheld its role as a leader in aerospace innovation and has become a trailblazer in the third revolution of flight.
“This event will highlight Ohio’s unique Advanced Air Mobility assets, including the National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence and dedicated airspace used as a proving ground for emerging aviation technology. We hope the race to claim the Pulitzer Trophy inspires aviation enthusiasts of all ages.”
Dan Sloat, Executive Producer of the Pulitzer Electric Aircraft Race and Founder of the AAM Institute, added, “NAAMCE is a world-class facility with a thriving ecosystem of innovation and it will prove to be the perfect inaugural host. The Race will celebrate the dawn of electric aviation, pay homage to our aviation pioneers, and drive positive public awareness.”
The selection process for the host city was highly competitive, with Salinas and Stockton, California, emerging as two strong contenders. Both cities presented impressive bids, reflecting their commitment to advancing electric aviation. However, Springfield secured the highest composite score of 96.3, ultimately winning the opportunity to host this historic race.
As the event draws closer, the Pulitzer Electric Aircraft Race promises is expected to be a landmark moment in the evolution of AAM, spotlighting electric flight innovations while paying tribute to aviation’s pioneering spirit. With Springfield at the center of this global showcase, the race will be a testament to how far the industry has come—and where it is headed next.
